The journal covers language issues researched in the branches of applied linguistics, such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, pragmatics, stylistics, corpus linguistics, and others. In the area of literature, it covers literary history, literary theory, literary criticism, and others, which may include written texts, movies, and other media.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze Daniels’ work of historical context in his movie The Butler. To reveal the purpose of research, the writers utilize qualitative methodology with a mimetic approach to analyze the historical context in the movie. The results concluded that this movie gives a significant proportion in three types of history, namely political, social, and intellectual history. In the political aspect, the movie depicts the history when the United States used to establish the Segregation Law based on racial background. In the social aspect, the movie depicts non-white Americans who were considered unworthy. Whereas, in intellectual aspect, the movie portrays many historical figures and other Americans who fought the injustice demanding equality as the citizens.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the grammatical intricacy of short story written by an Indonesian child author. Grammatical intricacy is built of clause, nominal group, and lexis. These three aspects show us how the author expresses his mind into language. The data source is short story titled “Mahkota Surga untuk Ayah”. The author is an Indonesian child whose her story has been published by Lintang. This research is a kind of descriptive qualitative using observation-notification technique (simak-catat). The data are clauses, nominal groups, and lexis of the text. The result shows that the author exploited the language in 148 clauses and most of them are complex clauses. The thing goes different for nominal groups, most of them are in simplex. Most of lexis are exploited in congruent forms. From the characteristics of the language author used this text is written in spoken language and has a high grammatical intricacy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the semantic features in fraudulent ads in Facebook. This study is conducted by using two kinds of advertisement which are found in Facebook. The researchers are analyzing the word, sentence, or phrase that suspected as the way to convince the customers by following theory of meaning from Leech (1981). The data that the researchers got showed that the first type of advertisement is emphasized more to the affective and social meaning where the seller leads the customers’ opinion that the seller is a good or trusted person. Moreover, the seller uses prase that include to conceptual meaning to explain the condition or specification of the cellphone in detail.In the second type of advertisement, the element emphasized by the seller is thematic mining by referring to the emphasis of the word used in the advertisement.More over, theresult for identification of fraudulent ads in this study is still dominated by the usual way, such as by looking at the price offered. However, the results of this study can also be used as a consideration in identifying fraudulent ads.

Abstract

Holocaust studies post-World War II have found ways in intersecting to other studies within the Postmodern era. In 1980, a short-story “The Shawl” was written depicting a holocaust brutality done towards the Jews. The story revolves around a Jewish woman, Rosa, that lived through the bitterness of seeing her daughter, Magda, being slaughtered in a concentration camp. In the context of “The Shawl”, this article would like to describe the relationship between holocaust studies and the subaltern studies within postcolonialism. Furthermore, this article discusses if there are hints “The Shawl” invokes a sentiment for the Jews to take revenge towards their former oppressors. The aim of this article is to further the argument “The Shawl” has no characteristics of taking revenge which eventually leads to subaltern genocide. “The Shawl” functions better as a remembrance so generations of the future do not repeat the horrors of the past.

Abstract

This study is a comparative literature study that seeks to investigate postcolonialism study in the Arabic Literary Criticism from the early postcolonialism study to the current postcolonial study. This study uses American comparative literature theory, the diachronic approach, and historical methods. The results of this study are that postcolonialism entered into the Arabic Literary Criticism through postcolonial theory book that was translated to Arabic language, students who studied in America or Europe and then taught at universities in the Arabic world, and also the internet. In addition, the attitude of the Arabs towards postcolonialism study in the Arabic Literary Criticism is still limited as consumers and not theorists.

Abstract

This article discusses the news relating to the electability of Indonesian President Joko Widodo in the 2019 Presidential Election published in online media. It aims to reveal the style of discourse in media construction about electability reporting on Joko Widodo in MetrotvNews.com. It employs Critical Discourse Analysis of Fairclough which involves analysis of text dimensions and discourse practice. For uncovering and discovering the style of media discourse, the stylistical theory of Ali Imron Al-Mufruf is used. The source of data is the online media in the form of news that reports about Joko Widodo electability in 2019 presidential election. Data analysis is done by referential method to other related reports at MetrotvNews.com. The result shows the discourse style of parallelism used by metrotvnews.com in reporting the electability of Indonesian President Joko Widodo with different time and word but showing a similarity in discourse.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the functions of illocutionary speech acts used by teachers in learning interactions in class. The research method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data collection techniques in this study are observing and taking notes. The source of data in this study is teachers’ speech acts in learning interactions at State Vocational High School (SMK Negeri) 1 Klaten. The data used is the teachers’ oral speech on Mathematics, Science, History, and Accounting subjects in thelearning interactions at SMK Negeri 1 Klaten which has one conception or main idea. According to the results of the study, there are five functions of illocutionary speech acts used by the teacher in the learning interactionsin the class. The five functions include assertive functions in the form of stating and complaining; directive function in the form of commanding and advising; expressive function in the form of greeting and praising; commissive function in the form of promising and offering something; declarative function in the form of giving a name. Of the five functions, directive function is used most frequently, in which the teachers giving more commands.
